“Did you see that?”
With this simple question, Liz Chaderton invites viewers to pause and perceive the world – its animals and plants – with renewed attention; to appreciate their vitality, elegance, and joie de vivre.
In her watercolours, beauty emerges through drops of pigment and light, a delicate and vibrant language that captures the grace and energy of every creature, revealing details often overlooked in the rush of daily life.
Liz lives in a small village in Berkshire, UK, working mainly in watercolour and ink. She initially pursued her love of science and words, but the need to create always called to her. Liz travelled extensively with pencil and sketchbook in hand, sketching giant tortoises in the Galápagos and ancestral houses in Indonesia. Gradually, painting became impossible to ignore, and in 2016 she committed to being a full-time artist.
As she explains herself:
“I create art to remind us of the wonder of the world — the quiet resilience of nature, the deep bond that connects us to animals, and the infinite possibilities for renewal. My work is a moment of joy in a chaotic world, an invitation to see reality not as it is, but as it could be.”
For Liz, painting in watercolour is “like trying to herd cats”: a constant challenge between control and freedom, between precision and surprise. Just like her feline subjects, water has a life of its own: it moves, slips, rebels… Yet it is in this unpredictability that her most intense images are born.
In the cat portraits collected in this exhibition, Chaderton plays with transparency and colour to evoke the wild ancestor that lives within every domestic cat. Stripes become traces of memory, reminders of the tiger that still hides beneath the surface of everyday life.
Her works, suspended between gentleness and strength, remind us that wonder is never far away: it lives beside us, watches us, and sometimes simply purrs… just like her cat Piper!
